What is Abbotic?
#

Abbotic is a prescribed medication used to treat bacterial infections affecting the respiratory tract and skin. This medication is also frequently prescribed to combat Helicobacter pylori infections, which can trigger peptic ulcers. It is important to note that Abbotic must be taken under a doctor’s prescription.

Active Ingredient
#

Abbotic contains clarithromycin, an active ingredient that functions by killing bacteria and inhibiting their growth. Consequently, bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, pharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, or cellulitis can be effectively treated.

For patients infected with Helicobacter pylori, Abbotic is commonly prescribed alongside other antibiotics and acid-reducing medications such as esomeprazole or lansoprazole. It is crucial to remember that Abbotic is ineffective against viral infections like the flu.

Forms of Abbotic
#

Abbotic is available in six different forms:

  • Abbotic 500 mg (10 tablets) containing 100 mg clarithromycin per tablet
  • Abbotic XL 500 mg (10 tablets), with each tablet containing 500 mg clarithromycin
  • Abbotic 125 mg in a 30 ml dry syrup, containing 125 mg clarithromycin per 5 ml
  • Abbotic 125 mg in a 60 ml dry syrup, containing 125 mg clarithromycin per 5 ml
  • Abbotic 125 mg in a 50 ml dry syrup, containing 125 mg clarithromycin per 5 ml
  • Abbotic 250 mg in a 70 ml dry syrup, with each 5 ml containing 250 mg clarithromycin

Indications and Usage
#

Who Can Use Abbotic?
#

Abbotic is suitable for adults and falls under the category of macrolide antibiotics. It requires a prescription for usage.

Abbotic During Pregnancy
#

  • Category C: There is insufficient evidence from animal and human studies to explain the safety of this drug for pregnant women and the fetus.

This medication should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.

Abbotic for Breastfeeding Mothers
#

The clarithromycin content in Abbotic can be absorbed into breast milk, thus breastfeeding mothers should not use this medication unless advised by a doctor.

Precautions Before Using Abbotic
#

Abbotic is a prescription medication that must be used cautiously. Before using this drug, certain considerations must be taken into account:

  1. Inform your doctor about any allergies you have. Do not take this medication if allergic to clarithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin and azithromycin.
  2. Discuss with your doctor if you or your family members have experienced heart attacks or irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia).
  3. Inform your doctor if you have a history of jaundice or liver disease. Individuals with these conditions may be advised against using Abbotic.
  4. Inform your doctor if you have or have had kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, phenylketonuria, myasthenia gravis, low potassium (hypokalemia), low magnesium (hypomagnesemia), or diarrhea.
  5. Inform your doctor if you are planning to be vaccinated with a live bacterial vaccine such as the BCG vaccine while using Abbotic.
  6. Discuss with your doctor the use of Abbotic if you are planning surgery, including dental surgery.
  7. Discuss with your doctor the use of this medication in the elderly, who are at higher risk of side effects such as arrhythmia and hearing disorders.
  8. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  9. Inform your physician of any medications, supplements, or herbal products you are or will be using alongside Abbotic to avoid drug interactions.
  10. Seek immediate medical attention if allergic reactions or serious side effects occur after taking Abbotic.

Proper Usage of Abbotic
#

Ensure you take Abbotic as directed by your doctor, and always read the instructions before using the medication. Do not modify the dosage without your doctor’s approval.

Tips for Effective Use
#

  • Abbotic can be taken with or without food. If nausea occurs, it is advisable to take it after meals during the next scheduled administration.
  • Swallow Abbotic tablets whole with water. Do not split, chew, or crush the tablets before swallowing.
  • If prescribed as a dry syrup, dilute the syrup with water according to the doctor’s recommendations.
  • Try to take Abbotic at the same time each day and use an alarm as a reminder.
  • If you forget to take a dose, consume it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule without doubling the dose.
  • Complete the entire course of medication, even if symptoms improve, as prematurely stopping Abbotic may lead to antibiotic resistance.
  • Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve after a few days or if they worsen.
  • Store Abbotic in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of children’s reach.

Drug Interactions
#

Taking clarithromycin-containing medications like Abbotic may lead to drug interactions if used with other medications indiscriminately. Some of the interactions include:

  • Increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest or arrhythmia with cisapride, domperidone, pimozide, terfenadine, or quinidine
  • Increased side effects of alprazolam, ciclosporin, digoxin, omeprazole, midazolam, methylprednisolone, ranolazine, tacrolimus, sildenafil, and quetiapine

  • Increased risk of serious bleeding with ticagrelor
  • Decreased effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines like the BCG or typhoid vaccine

  • Increased blood levels of colchicine, increasing risk of its side effects
  • Elevated levels and side effects of sildenafil, tadalafil, or vardenafil
  • Increased risk of hypoglycemia with insulin or other antidiabetic drugs like sulfonylureas, repaglinide, and nateglinide
  • Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
