Understanding Acifar: Benefits, Dosage, and Side Effects
#

Acifar is a medication used to treat infections caused by the herpes virus, including shingles and herpes simplex in the genital or lip area. This antiviral drug can also help prevent recurrence and reduce the risk of spreading the virus within the body, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

What is Acifar?
#

Acifar is available in caplet form and contains the active ingredient acyclovir. As an antiviral medication, acyclovir works by inhibiting the proliferation of the herpes virus in the body, which helps alleviate herpes symptoms. It is important to note that Acifar is used to relieve symptoms of infection and is not a cure for the disease.

Available Products:

  • Acifar 200 mg caplets, containing 200 mg of acyclovir per caplet.
  • Acifar 400 mg caplets, containing 400 mg of acyclovir per caplet.

Precautions Before Taking Acifar

Before using Acifar, it’s crucial to pay attention to a few important points:

  • Inform your doctor about any allergies you have. Acifar should not be used by individuals allergic to its components.
  • Notify your healthcare provider if you have or have had kidney issues or a compromised immune system, such as due to HIV/AIDS or chemotherapy.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you plan to undergo vaccination during the use of Acifar.
  • To reduce the risk of virus transmission, avoid sexual intercourse if experiencing genital herpes symptoms. Use barrier contraception, like condoms, during sexual activities.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant while using Acifar.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about any other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking to prevent drug interactions.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if allergic reactions or serious side effects occur after consuming Acifar.

Dosage and Guidelines for Using Acifar
#

The following outlines the general dosage of Acifar based on condition and patient age:

For Herpes Simplex
#

  • Adults: 200–400 mg, five times daily (every 4 hours), for five days. To prevent recurrence, the dosage is 200 mg, four times daily (every 6 hours). This can increase to 400 mg for individuals with a weakened immune system.
  • Children under 2 years: Half the adult dose.
  • Children aged 2 years and above: Same as adult dosage.

For Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
#

  • Adults and children aged 12 years and above: 800 mg, five times daily, for five days.

  • Take this medication as soon as herpes symptoms first appear.
  • Consume Acifar either before or after meals. Swallow the caplet whole with water.
  • Take Acifar at the same time each day to optimize treatment results. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for the next dosage, skip the missed dose—do not double it.
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid side effects related to dehydration.
  • You might need regular kidney and liver function tests during treatment. Adhere to your medical appointments for optimal treatment outcomes.
  • Do not abruptly stop taking Acifar even if you feel better, unless advised by your healthcare provider. This helps prevent the recurrence of infection.
  • Store Acifar in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of children’s reach.

Interactions with Other Medications
#

Some interactions may occur when Acifar is combined with specific drugs:

  • Increased risk of side effects from theophylline.
  • Enhanced risk of Acifar side effects when used with probenecid or cimetidine.
  • Greater likelihood of impaired kidney function if combined with ciclosporin or tacrolimus.

To prevent undesirable drug interactions, always consult your healthcare provider before using Acifar with other medications.
